Forgot to mention, (and when I added it, my modify became a quote so I had a double post.)
The original kittens was a jpeg, very nice one. But I saved it as a png, so the first three images, kittens, and two arrow screen shots are jpegs. Only the bottom Kittens is a png.

An optimizer? what exactly does that do? Read this topic here. PhotoPlus has the optimizer built-in.

That's a good discussion thread, Rad. PSP has an optimizer as well, and Animation Shop does too. I always use jpeg for my photos, it does the best job.
Another tip is to be sure you have cropped your image down and gotten rid of empty space. It might look transparent on the edges, but to the computer, it has space around it and it will include that space in the file size as bytes.
