Over time PUREVENOM and I have noticed something very strange happening to animated gifs hosted on Photobucket. These gifs seem to deteriate over time....! Here's an example. Some time ago I uploaded this gif. ---> The animation worked great for a couple of days/weeks (I'm not sure about the timeline), but that same gif now looks like this.... ---> It's like they have mice eating away at the gifs. And NO, it is not just THIS gif. It's happening to ALL animated gifs I uploaded to Photobucket. Now, there is nothing wrong with the gifs itself. When you download these gifs they display normal on your PC. Has anyone else noticed this problem with Photobucket?

It's weird because I haven't had the problem with any other gif, including the original alien head avatar that's still in my photobucket account. And I've been using this avatar that you made for me over at I-Mod since the day you made it, and no mice have started eating away at it. I'm wondering if maybe there is a code conflict causing it. I still have all three of the little avatars, I'll make a post in the staff only board at my site with all three .gifs in it and see what develops. RAD, you have access to that board, so you'll be able to watch it as well. To help rule out possibilities, I'll run the same test here. Both posted the same day minutes apart. Avvy-1___________Avvy-2__________Avvy-3 _______ ______ Avvy x 100 Original Alien avvy EDIT: Okay immediately upon posting them here, they already show signs of deterioration. But they display fine at my site, and in my photobucket account. I'm thinking more of a code conflict causing it. I know when we had the poll vote issue is was due to the forum customize code, I'm not using that code at my site, may be worth checking into that code first and see if it's the source.

This is what I got from Photobucket's Support Team:
When uploading your gif files, instead of choosing the 1 MB filesize for your upload option, please instead choose one of the resolution sizes closest to your original. This will help so that the least amount of compression will occur with your web display.
I'll play around with this as soon as I can find the time.

Well wouldn't that effect the display at my site as well? Okay I re-named this one at uploaded it to the closest file size.

Looking good so far. Now, let's see how long it takes before it gets chewed-up again....

Three and a half weeks..... That's how long it took the mice to find these images (again). And no, this is not a code problem or this image would have been affected too: and as you can see, this one is NOT. (This particular image is hosted on the IOD server.)

There is no possible way, that I know of, that it is the code that is doing this. My code doesn't resize or adjust any pics. It just gets the pic from the entered URL. That's it.
Ok, I thought the problem is in the resizing. That gif is 57x57px. And it is the one you are using for your avatar. On your profile page you specify the size as 65x65px (enlarging the pic). I changed it to 57x57px and still the same. (I changed it back to 65x65px) Worth a shot anyways...
But, somehow your pic IS losing data. The original (good) pic is 12863 bytes. The pic you are using is only 11758 bytes. Missing 1105 bytes (about 1K). Strange... It may be possible that your image did not completely upload or got corrupted somehow with photobucket. I would try deleting it from photobucket, save the avatar that Rad posted and upload that one. View the freshly uploaded avatar and check to see if the filesize is 12863 bytes.
Regards, SubDevo

All those gifs are still going strong over at my site. xxaliennationxx.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=staffonly&action=display&thread=1630 That's a staff only board, but RAD has access to it. I've also been using that avvy over at Lightspeed Art for going on three to four weeks now with no trouble. If Photobucket is the cause, then would it not show the same results at my site or over at Lightspeed Art? I uploaded a new fifth avatar, and checked it's size. It is at - 12.56 KB (12863 bytes) GIF Image (animated, 10 frames) 57px x 57px Hey Sub, remember when I didn't have the option to modify my post for the favicon thread? Well I just noticed that there is no option for me to modify my posts here in this thread for "Reply #2, and Reply #4". The rest of my posts in this thread are displaying the modify option. I changed browsers (Firefox to IE7) and it was the same results.

Don't be shy! lol Check any posts you have made, and see if you have a "Modify" button for your posts. We'll try to track this one down...Hey purevenom. Try THIS link. It is a direct link to modify your #2 post. Does it work?

It says An Error Has Occurred, I am not allowed to edit this post.
I just noticed that Reply #4 was made on Jan 26, 2010, that's almost four weeks. About the same time it took the gifs to start eating away. Coincidence?

That would explain the "modify" problem if those two posts were made before delete/reinstatement of your account.
